Types of email security solutions

There are 3 main types of anti-spam solutions: desktop tools, systems installed on or “in front of” the company’s e-mail server, and outsourced solutions.

In the first case, spam arrives unnecessarily at the user’s workstation before being interpreted as such. However, these free software packages must be installed on all workstations. What’s more, since spam arrives on the workstation before it is analyzed, bandwidth is saturated.

In the second case, the anti-spam solution is installed on or upstream of the corporate mail server. Here, filtering takes place as soon as the message arrives on the corporate network, so users don’t receive unsolicited messages. It’s not necessary to install the solution on all workstations, but the bandwidth is saturated. What’s more, this solution requires maintenance, updating and administration, and therefore additional resources.

Outsourced solutions, on the other hand, have the enormous advantage of filtering out spam and viruses before they even enter the company and clog up the customer’s server and bandwidth. What’s more, this type of solution is fully managed in real time by experts. They can also be installed very quickly (usually in a matter of minutes), without any architectural modifications.
